Polar Bear and Penguin Sensory Bin
Early one morning we watched a TV show on Netflix called Feeding Time, which was about polar bears and penguins. The show gave me an idea for a sensory bin activity.
Using the same plastic tub I used the other week for the dinosaur dig, I filled it up with cold water and ice cubes. She already had 3 different sized polar bears and then I had Brian run to Michael's to pick up a penguin with a Michael's coupon. I wanted to create some kind of iceberg and ended up using a white shelf from her play kitchen that floated in the water. The idea was to let Riley have the polar bears and penguins play in the water like she saw on the show. I even threw a ball in the water for the polar bears to play with.
She was so excited for this activity until she touched the water that was ice cold (polar bears and penguins live in cold climates). After 10 seconds she said "Mommy I don't like this water. I want warm water." I was a little worried about using warm water since she was potty training at the time and we already had many accidents during the day. So I filled it up with warm water and she played for about 45 minutes. I threw in a few science stuff as well. We watched ice melt and talked about why it melts. She took her magnifying glass to observe the ice melting and creating tiny bubbles. We also tested to see which items floated and which items would sink. She LOVED this activity!
